Neuerscheinungen/BuchbesprechungenDear Colleagues, we would like to invite you to contribute a paper to the proposedsession at the 15 th Annual EAA Meeting to be held in Riva del Garda, Italy,September 2009:Underwater archaeology and the future of submerged European prehistorywith keynote papers by:- Dr. Anders Fischer (National Cultural Heritage Agency, Denmark)- Professor Geoff Bailey (University of York, United Kingdom)Major events of human prehistory, such as the post-glacial recolonization of NorthernEurope and the spread of agriculture though the Mediterranean, took place acrosslandscapes that are now, at least partially, underwater — the consequence of globalsea-level rise and regional crustal subsidence since the Late Pleistocene. Much of thesubmerged landscapes lie at depths accessible to divers and can be investigatedarchaeologically. Prehistoric underwater research has emerged in recent decades fromthe western Baltic to the eastern Mediterranean and methodology can be applied tocoastal regions throughout Europe and its surrounding environs. Moreover, there is agrowing awareness of the potential for underwater archaeology to transform our ideasabout key events in prehistory. This session will examine new developments in the field of submerged prehistoriclandscapes. Contributions will cover not only in the results of current underwaterresearch, both archaeological and paleoenvironmental, but also underwatermethodology and techniques for site discovery, excavation, conservation, andinterpretation. Emphasis will be placed on international collaboration and prospectsfor future research. Please submit your paper title and abstract (200 word max.) by February 28, 2009 tojonathan.benjamin@ed.ac.uk with “Submerged Prehistory 2009” in the subject line.Best regards,Dr Jonathan BenjaminDr Catriona PickardClive BonsallSchool of History, Classics & ArchaeologyUniversity of EdinburghEH1 1LT ScotlandNote: This is a preliminary call for papers for a proposed session at the EuropeanArchaeologists’ Association (EAA) conference, to be held in September 2009 – datesto be specified [see: http://www.e-a-a.org/2009.htm ].
