engl. ∕ The word “Allmeinde” used to stand for
the common (grazing) grounds that could be used
by all members of the community according to a
certain set of rules. Today a certain sense of
community has come back – and not only in Lech!
So Allmeinde stands for common grounds, for physical property
as well as, in the broadest sense, knowledge. The english term
“common ground(s)” is widely used nowadays. Star architect David
Chipperfield even chose the term as leitmotif for this years’ Biennale
in Venice. A privately financed, independent culture initiative by
the same name was already established in Lech 12 years ago: the
“Allmeinde Commongrounds”. This initiative made the question of
community a vital point of interest long before the uN proclaimed
2012 to be the year of cooperatives. The background for the new
trust in the power of common goals was the dwindling faith in a
system of society where the individual is increasingly relieved of any
responsibility towards society. “Allmeinde Commonground” works
as a counterpoise focused on difference and autonomy in the proper
cultural space and concerning the organization of said space.
Gerold and Katia Schneider, hoteliers at “Almhof” and initiators
of the culture project remember: “Allmeinde” came into being as
an idealistic idea at uni.’ In order to provide room for dialogue,
reflexion and aesthetic experience the two of them converted an old
stable and created an internationally renowned building for exhibitions,
concerts, conferences and workshops. The vision of a strong
community is alive – especially in visionary Lech!
