L.L. ⁄ How much of the real Hotel edelweiss will one find in the<br />
setting of “Fünf-Sterne-Kerle inklusive”?<br />
g.H. ⁄ The book contains a lot of the edelweiss and its guests. Some<br />
actually recognized themselves, some thought they were the bad guy<br />
which of course casts a certain light on them… In any case, I did try<br />
to capture the extraordinary atmosphere – and the book is an authentic<br />
travel guide too. The skiing routes are described, the Flexenhäusle,<br />
Rudi and his Balmalp and the cartwheel-sized pizza. Those who<br />
read the book will certainly feel at home here or at least they’re well<br />
instructed.<br />
L.L. ⁄ How did locals in <strong>Lech</strong> <strong>Zürs</strong> react to the novel?<br />
g.H. ⁄ It went down well with the locals – and still does. And I also<br />
thought that one could make an interesting event out of it – guided<br />
tours on Katrin’s tracks, with visits to different inns and tastings of<br />
specialties, a short reading on the mountain, personally signed books<br />
and a sleigh run with torches at the end. everyone who heard my idea<br />
was intrigued but unfortunately it hasn’t been put into action yet.<br />
L.L. ⁄ How could one imagine a typical day in Gaby Hauptmann’s<br />
holiday on the Arlberg?<br />
g.H. ⁄ Well, the time at which the alarm clock goes off depends on the<br />
weather. When the weather is great, we go up the mountain early, if<br />
it’s not so good we have a nice long breakfast. Then we continue towards<br />
the Täli and at Flexenhäusle we have a cappuccino or – depending<br />
on the time – a small beer and discuss if the weather and snow<br />
conditions are better suited for <strong>Zürs</strong> or the circuit. And then, off we<br />
go… At least until we take a break at Rudi’s on the Balmalp and that<br />
means: Heiße Witwe… (“Hot Widow”, a drink of hot plum liqueur<br />
and cream.)<br />
L.L. ⁄ Do you sometimes write when you’re on holiday?<br />
g.H. ⁄ Yes, sometimes I’d prefer not to and I’d rather just enjoy myself,<br />
but I also have deadlines. This might mean I have to sit downstairs<br />
at the bar and hammer away at the keyboard.<br />
