establishing a longer instructional year for students or a longer work year for<br />

teachers as part <strong>of</strong> a school-based decision making process authorized by this<br />

Agreement. Each year the <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> shall establish the school calendar<br />

listing the days designated as holidays.<br />

B. Workday<br />

1. <strong>Teachers</strong><br />

(a) The workday for teachers shall be seven (7) hours four (4) minutes including<br />

a thirty (30) minute, duty-free lunch in secondary schools and a forty-five<br />

(45) minute, duty-free lunch in elementary schools. The teacher work day may<br />

be scheduled between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Without increasing the total number<br />

<strong>of</strong> hours <strong>of</strong> work, nor reducing the total hours <strong>of</strong> instruction, the start and end<br />

times for teachers and students shall be set in individual schools. In this process,<br />

due consideration shall be afforded to the transportation requirements <strong>of</strong> the<br />

school.<br />

(b) In the elementary schools, the student day shall begin ten (10) minutes<br />

after the teacher day.<br />

(c) A school nurse shall have a regularly scheduled fifteen (15) minute break<br />

during the span <strong>of</strong> the working day.<br />

(1) Such fifteen (15) minute breaks shall not be used to shorten the workday<br />

or to extend the lunch period.<br />

(2) In a school where there is more than one (1) nurse, breaks shall be<br />

scheduled so that only one (1) nurse is on break at a time.<br />

(d) Lunch time for the school nurse shall be scheduled by the building Principal<br />

and shall be at the same time as that scheduled for other pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

employees in that building.<br />

2. Non-Teaching Assistants<br />

The workday for Non-Teaching Assistants shall be seven and one-quarter (7¼)<br />

hours not including a forty-five (45) minute, duty-free lunch. The workday shall<br />

be scheduled between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. However, in cases <strong>of</strong> emergencies,<br />

NTAs may be required to work up to thirty (30) minutes beyond the seven and<br />

one-quarter (7¼) hour work day without additional compensation.<br />

An emergency task is defined as one that is not a regular or recurring task, but<br />

rather one that arises unexpectedly and cannot be performed on a subsequent<br />

day and does not recur on a regular basis.<br />

3. Secretaries<br />

The regular work day for ten (10) month secretaries shall be seven and onequarter<br />

hours (7¼) including a thirty (30) minute, duty-free lunch and one (1)<br />

fifteen (15) minute break in the morning and one (1) fifteen (15) minute break<br />

in the afternoon.<br />

The regular work day for twelve (12) month secretaries shall be seven and<br />

one-half (7½) hours including a thirty (30) minute, duty-free lunch and one (1)<br />

fifteen (15) minute break in the morning and one (1) fifteen (15) minute break<br />

in the afternoon.<br />
