XVIII. Working Conditions <strong>of</strong> <strong>Teachers</strong><br />

ing with their pupils. This time is to be used for preparation by the teacher so<br />

relieved.<br />

(d) If a teacher in an elementary school loses a preparation period during any<br />

school year, then he/she shall have the time restored, except that for only the<br />

first four (4) preparation periods lost during any school year he/she shall have<br />

the option to have restored such preparation period, or to receive pay at the<br />

prevailing extra-curricular rate <strong>of</strong> compensation for the lost preparation<br />

period.<br />

(e) Specialist teachers shall be rostered for the teaching <strong>of</strong> their specialty to<br />

classes on a regularly scheduled basis with the amount <strong>of</strong> time for lunch and<br />

preparation periods equal to the amount <strong>of</strong> time afforded for such purposes to<br />

other teachers in the school.<br />

(f) One hundred (100) hours, at the extra-curricular rate, shall be allotted in<br />

each year <strong>of</strong> this Agreement to each elementary school to pay those teachers<br />

who as <strong>of</strong> September 1, 1996 were serving as safety patrol sponsor for a school<br />

year <strong>of</strong> service. This allocation shall be frozen; and if a teacher serving as safety<br />

patrol sponsor vacates the position for any reason, the Principal and Building<br />

Committee may agree to establish a new position <strong>of</strong> safety patrol sponsor. Such<br />

safety patrol sponsor shall be entitled to the number <strong>of</strong> hours at the extra-curricular<br />

rate as agreed to by the Principal and Building Committee.<br />

(g) One hundred twenty (120) hours, at the extra-curricular rate, shall be<br />

allotted each year to each elementary school and each institutional school to pay<br />

teachers engaged in approved extracurricular programs.<br />

(h) During each school year, there shall be an allocation <strong>of</strong> forty thousand<br />

four hundred and four (40,404) hours at the extra-curricular rate in addition to<br />

the hours allocated in (f) and (g) above for approved extra-curricular programs.<br />

Such additional hours shall be distributed among all elementary schools on the<br />

basis <strong>of</strong> the size <strong>of</strong> their respective school faculties.<br />

(i) In each high school, each teacher shall receive at least two hundred twentyfive<br />

(225) minutes <strong>of</strong> preparation time each week. If a teacher loses more than<br />

one hundred eighty (180) minutes <strong>of</strong> preparation time during any school year,<br />

then such teacher shall have the time restored for any additional lost preparation<br />

time within thirty (30) calendar days <strong>of</strong> each lost period <strong>of</strong> preparation.<br />

(j) In the event a long assembly is held in a secondary school, each period in<br />

the day shall be shortened in preference to eliminating a period.<br />

(k) Whenever a teacher is required to cover an assignment during a preparation<br />

period, he/she shall receive in writing the reason therefore before the request<br />

or not later than the next school day.<br />

2. Rosters<br />

(a) In the spring <strong>of</strong> each year, the Principal in each school shall design the<br />

Master Schedule/Roster for the next school year. The Master Schedule/Roster<br />

shall meet students’ educational needs, fairly address the pr<strong>of</strong>essional needs and<br />

interests <strong>of</strong> staff, and satisfy the requirements <strong>of</strong> this Agreement, including but<br />

not limited to work year and day, instructional time (Article XVII, Section A),<br />

and banking time and early dismissal for pr<strong>of</strong>essional development (Article X,<br />

Section B. 1-2).<br />
