Shqiptars). A Wild West feel permeates
the villages. It’s only when we reach Kelcyra
and get on the main road towards Gjirokaster
that the familiar old feeling of carefree
asphalt riding returns.
Gjirokaster, the last major city before the
Greek border, is a UNESCO World Heritage
Site and is on the verge of becoming
a big tourist destination. Its old upper
town is an absolute treasure. We stop
at a garden restaurant where the menu
thoughtfully already comes in four languages.
Alongside Albanian, English and
French, German guests can also enjoy the
amusing translations, presumably cooked
up by some translation tool on the internet.
Which is one thing we haven’t missed for
a second over the last week.
