munity. The film takes you on a
motorcycle quest to some of the
wildest places on Earth seeking
out the rarest bear species and
the dedicated people racing to
save them from extinction. BE-
ARTREK, Robyn thought, would
be a powerful way to bring the
needs of Andean bears to the
world.
Also called spectacled bears
because of the unique markings
around the eyes of many bears,
the Andean bear gets its more
common name from its home in
the Andes Mountains of South
America. Despite a range that
spans five countries, these bears
are very rare. That’s why Robyn’s
work and her approach to conservation
are so important.”
In the dry foothills of northern
Peru, the threatened Andean
bear lives alongside rural villagers.
But it’s only with the help of
these villagers, including Robyn’s
small team of locals, that the nearby
bear population stands
a chance. That’s why Robyn –
with support from Wildlife Media
– is also working to meet the
needs of the villagers, like jobs,
training, and housing. Thanks to
Robyn, the village also has a recently
built research and education
center.
And the investment is paying
off. The area in Peru that Robyn’s
team has been working in will
become an archeological and
ecological park for the benefit of
bears and people. The protected
area is approximately 13,000
hectares, and it was almost entirely
designed around their bear
research data.
Here’s how Wildlife Media
played a critical role. The satellite
collars the group gave Robyn
obtained movement patterns for
two Andean bears and that data
was used to create the park’s
boundaries. One bear, a male,
travelled 150 km in 3 days.
“Imaginative strategies will determine
the future of our planet’s
wild places and creatures,” says
Chris Morgan. “BEARTREK is a
perfect example of such a strategy.”
And Chris‘ Touratech equipped
BMW F650GS is an important
part of it.
The film is an eye-catching
way to bring bears, their incredible
habitats, and their needs
to a global audience. Film profits
– expected at several million
dollars – will be put right back
into conservation. And the associated
social-media campaign –
including the fast-growing on-line
gaming market – will also reach
millions of people, which will generate
even more funding and
awareness.
Yet even before film completion,
BEARTREK is making a big
difference for threatened wildlife
and local communities. Already,
Wildlife Media has given over
$40,000 in cash, equipment,
and in-kind services to global,
