Once a year the entire Varenese fami -
ly meets at home with Mum. Giovanni
has seven siblings, three brothers
and four sisters, who in turn all have
children of their own. Grandma Antonietta
(76) is blessed with fourteen
grandchildren. In the summer, all travel
to Corigliano Calabro. Then
Antonietta‘s spacious residence turns
into chaos. Time for a big festa! People
drive to Schiavonea on the sea
together, picnic, sip espresso and
take long walks along the beach.
Too little work for too many people
has always been a problem in
Corigliano. Whoever wanted to really
earn money either went to northern
Italy or emigrated to Germany.
This is how it was with Giovanni,
too. In 1985, he gave Germany a
try. At first, the trained bricklayer kept
himself afloat with various jobs until
at some point he opened his own restaurant.
Fifteen years ago, while he was
back home again on holiday he met
his Maria. She‘s from ... Corigliano.
„It was love at first sight. And my feelings
have not changed to this day.“
One year later they married. Then
Angela and Vincenzo were born. In
accordance with the custom of southern
Italy, the grandchildren were
named after their grandfather. In
Giovanni‘s case, after his father who
died six years ago. Thus there are
three grandchildren with the same name in the Varenese clan.
To the question what he misses most about Italy, Giovanni
says: „The summer.“ The harsh winters in the Black Forest with
up to 20 degrees below zero and snow one metre deep are
still a shock to his southern Italian body which is just not made
for such cold weather. Apart from this, Giovanni feels very
good in Germany. After many years of working for himself,
he found his dream job at Travel Inn. Here, he and Maria put
100 dishes on the table every day for Touratech employees.
International cuisine, of course! Cuban, Mongolian, Chinese
... and sometimes even Italian.
At the 2010 Travel Event, Giovanni and team entered into
Touratech history with 920 pizzas (125 kg of flour, 55 kg
of mozzarella, 55 kg of tomatoes, 14 kg of salami, 9 kg of
ham, 5 kg of peppers, 5 kg of onions and 5 kg of broccoli).
