Once a year the entire Varenese fami -<br />

ly meets at home with Mum. Giovanni<br />

h<strong>as</strong> seven siblings, three brothers<br />

and four sisters, who in turn all have<br />

children of their own. Grandma Antonietta<br />

(76) is blessed with fourteen<br />

grandchildren. In the summer, all travel<br />

to Corigliano Calabro. Then<br />

Antonietta‘s spacious residence turns<br />

into chaos. Time for a big festa! People<br />

drive to Schiavonea on the sea<br />

together, picnic, sip espresso and<br />

take long walks along the beach.<br />

Too little work for too many people<br />

h<strong>as</strong> always been a problem in<br />

Corigliano. Whoever wanted to really<br />

earn money either went to northern<br />

Italy or emigrated to Germany.<br />

This is how it w<strong>as</strong> with Giovanni,<br />

too. In 1985, he gave Germany a<br />

try. At first, the trained bricklayer kept<br />

himself afloat with various jobs until<br />

at some point he opened his own restaurant.<br />

Fifteen years ago, while he w<strong>as</strong><br />

back home again on holiday he met<br />

his Maria. She‘s from ... Corigliano.<br />

„It w<strong>as</strong> love at first sight. And my feelings<br />

have not changed to this day.“<br />

One year later they married. Then<br />

Angela and Vincenzo were born. In<br />

accordance with the custom of southern<br />

Italy, the grandchildren were<br />

named after their grandfather. In<br />

Giovanni‘s c<strong>as</strong>e, after his father who<br />

died six years ago. Thus there are<br />

three grandchildren with the same name in the Varenese clan.<br />

To the question what he misses most about Italy, Giovanni<br />

says: „The summer.“ The harsh winters in the Black Forest with<br />

up to 20 degrees below zero and snow one metre deep are<br />

still a shock to his southern Italian body which is just not made<br />

for such cold weather. Apart from this, Giovanni feels very<br />

good in Germany. After many years of working for himself,<br />

he found his dream job at Travel Inn. Here, he and Maria put<br />

100 dishes on the table every day for <strong>Touratech</strong> employees.<br />

International cuisine, of course! Cuban, Mongolian, Chinese<br />

... and sometimes even Italian.<br />

At the 2010 Travel Event, Giovanni and team entered into<br />

<strong>Touratech</strong> history with 920 pizz<strong>as</strong> (125 kg of flour, 55 kg<br />

of mozzarella, 55 kg of tomatoes, 14 kg of salami, 9 kg of<br />

ham, 5 kg of peppers, 5 kg of onions and 5 kg of broccoli).
