The following PFD and P&ID illustrate the Mechanical Retrieval System (MRS):

The MRS is used to access and remove the compacted material from Silo 3. A mechanical I
excavator transfers Silo 3 .material to a bin located in the Excavator Room. A screw
conveyor (integral to the bin) feeds the material to the Inclined Conveyor, which transports
material to an elevation above the packaging systems and into the Transfer Conveyor.
This in turn conveys material to the Feed Conveyor, which feeds both of the packaging
stations.
On an as-needed basis, the mechanical excavator will also be used to manipulate a
vacuum hose end effector to retrieve material in a similar fashion to pneumatic retrieval
(A&RS, Section 1.1.2).

3.2 MRS INSTRUMENTATION
Table 3-1 summarizes, by function, all of the instrumentation in the MRS.
3.3 MRS CONTROL PHILOSOPHY
Silo material that is not removed by pneumatic operations is excavated from the silo using
the Excavator (EXC-11-5050), which enters the silo through an opening cut in the side
(A&RS, Section 5.2).
