A hard, repressed brick is to be preferred. If m<strong>on</strong>olithic<br />

c<strong>on</strong>crete, it should c<strong>on</strong>tain a so-called water-proofing material<br />

to close up the pores as much as possible and provide just<br />

that much more resistance to the infiltrati<strong>on</strong> of air.<br />

Reas<strong>on</strong>ably smooth and level inside building surfaces must<br />

be left to receive <str<strong>on</strong>g>insulati<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>, if it is to be erected in hot asphalt<br />

instead of the usual half-inch bedding of Portland cement mor-<br />

tar ; because<br />

there is no appreciable thickness to hot asphalt<br />

to compensate uneven wall surfaces, as previously noted. To]<br />

air-proof building walls, two good coats of a suitable "asphalt<br />

primer"—not ordinary asphalt paint—should be applied, by<br />

brush or spray gun, as reas<strong>on</strong> dictates. A suitable priming ma-<br />

terial is a good grade of unfluxed petroleum asphalt cut to the<br />

proper c<strong>on</strong>sistency with a solvent. The <strong>cork</strong>boards should<br />

then be erected in hot, odorless asphalt against the primed<br />

surface of the building walls, and the sec<strong>on</strong>d course of insu-<br />

lati<strong>on</strong> erected to the first in the same material and additi<strong>on</strong>-'<br />

ally secured with hickory skewers. If the building surfaces<br />

provided in the first place are not reas<strong>on</strong>ably smooth, the<br />

sec<strong>on</strong>d layer of <str<strong>on</strong>g>insulati<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> may have to be erected to the first<br />

layer in a bedding of mortar, instead of in hot asphalt, to
