research into the ability of the insulating material to retain<br />

its initial insulating efficiency under the c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s of its appli-<br />

cati<strong>on</strong> in the walls of the cabinet and for an indefinite period<br />

of time under known or anticipated c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s of service. If<br />

such research rexeals that the <str<strong>on</strong>g>insulati<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> cannot be expected to<br />

stand up under the c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s to be imposed, there probably<br />

will be fewer reas<strong>on</strong>s for going ahead with the plans to test<br />

out the cabinet.<br />

Ice cream cabinet service is much more severe than the<br />

service that household refrigerators receive. Thus the proper<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>insulati<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> to use and the correct specificati<strong>on</strong>s to be followed<br />

in installing it, are of much more importance in the ice cream<br />

cabinet than they are in units that operate at c<strong>on</strong>siderably<br />

higher temperatures. The experience of the dairy and ice<br />

cream industries for the past several decades in the <str<strong>on</strong>g>insulati<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

and operati<strong>on</strong> of refrigerated milk rooms, cream rooms, ice<br />

storage rooms, hardening rooms, antl cold rooms in general,<br />

is of value as research into the fitness or lack of fitness of any<br />

insulating material for ice cream cabinet c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> and<br />

temperatures. I'ure <strong>cork</strong>board is the standard material for all<br />

such rooms in countless plants all over the United States, the<br />

reas<strong>on</strong> for which was elaborated in the secti<strong>on</strong> of this text <strong>on</strong><br />

"The Insulati<strong>on</strong> of Ice and Cold Storage Plants and Cold<br />

Rooms in General," and which amounts to the fact that <strong>cork</strong>board<br />

is the <strong>on</strong>l)- suitable material employed for such purpose<br />

that when intelligently installed will retain approximately 90<br />

per cent of its initial insulating efficiency for ten years or<br />

more.<br />

satisfactory specificati<strong>on</strong>s were followed in installing<br />

the <strong>cork</strong>board in the cabinets, and assuming that the results<br />

are to be made available for general comparis<strong>on</strong> with the<br />

of other tests made at different times and places, the<br />

following c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s sh(ndd be obserxed :<br />

(a) A c<strong>on</strong>stant temperature room should be used, the temperature<br />

uniform to within <strong>on</strong>e degree Fahr. hy electric heater placed within<br />

|| hollow walls of the test room and c<strong>on</strong>trolled hy thermostat.
