head bunker was at about the same time being fast developed<br />

to a point of efficiency that opened up new avenues of use-<br />

; fulness for cold stores employing ice, or salt and ice mix-<br />

itures, as the refrigerant. This influence was quickly reflected<br />

in the large beer and meat coolers of retail establishments and<br />

in turn in the household ice-box, flaked charcoal becoming the<br />

preferred type of loose fill <str<strong>on</strong>g>insulati<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> between ice-box walls,<br />

followed later by silicate cott<strong>on</strong>, or mineral wool. Then for<br />

the first time the household ice-box was elevated, so to speak.
