covering of better quality. Each year this inner bark, the<br />

tree's real skin, forms a la\er of cells within, increasing the<br />

diameter of the trunk, and a layer of cells without, adding<br />

thickness to the covering of outer bark. If the inner bark<br />

is injured, the growth of the outer bark is permanently<br />

stopped at that point, the injured area appearing as scarred<br />

and uncovered for the remainder of the life of the tree. Also,<br />

stripping is never d<strong>on</strong>e during a "sirocco,"— a hot southernly<br />

wind blowing from the African coast to Italy, Sicily and<br />

Spain,—which would dry the inner bark too rapidly and ex-<br />

clude all further formati<strong>on</strong> of outer bark.<br />

8.—Sec<strong>on</strong>dary Bark.—After eight or ten years the outer<br />

bark is again removed, known as "pelas" or sec<strong>on</strong>dary bark.
