12.—Importance of Sorting.— "In taking up the processes<br />

of manipulati<strong>on</strong> we naturally start from the beginning, but<br />

the beginning in this case has a peculiar significance as relat-<br />

ing to the whole, for it is apparent to utilize <strong>cork</strong>wood to the<br />

fullest extent its qualities must be studied and the best used<br />

first, so that the beginning of the <strong>cork</strong>wood industry is pecu-<br />

liar in this fact, that it takes the best part and leaves but<br />

scrap, which must be studied carefully to realize the value lost<br />

in the first process; therefore, in the manufacture of <strong>on</strong>e<br />

article of <strong>cork</strong>wood it is necessary to make provisi<strong>on</strong> for the<br />

scrap (waste) created, and this is a characteristic of all such<br />

(<strong>cork</strong>) establishments."*<br />

The bulkiness of <strong>cork</strong>wood is probably its outstanding<br />

characteristic when c<strong>on</strong>sidered in relati<strong>on</strong> to its value, ard<br />

since the harvest occurs but <strong>on</strong>ce each year and the <strong>cork</strong>wood<br />

comes to market so<strong>on</strong> after the crop is taken, a large stock<br />

must necessarily be kept <strong>on</strong> hand by <strong>cork</strong> factories. The raw<br />

material is frequently purchased, or c<strong>on</strong>tracted for, a year in<br />

advance of its fabricati<strong>on</strong>. Thus great piles appear in the<br />
