Stadium – tournament court area<br />

For tournament play, where judges are required, a minimum clear area of 21.330 metre x 39.620 metre<br />

should be provided. This allows for both judges <strong>and</strong> player run off areas.<br />

Fencing<br />

The purpose of fencing around a tennis court is to keep most of the tennis balls within the court during<br />

play. Chain link fencing is the most commonly used, but any fence, wall, hedge or netting may be<br />

used.<br />

The overall dimensions of the fencing should be as follows:<br />

Back stop: 3.00 metre (2.438 metre minimum)<br />

Side stops: For a distance of 6.10 metres from the backstop the fence should be 3.00 metre, thereafter<br />

it may be reduced to a minimum of 1.00 metre.<br />

Construction of tennis courts<br />

A tennis court should be laid out to minimise players looking into the sun either when serving or when<br />

following the fl ight of a ball. In addition to the above it should be laid out to avid distracting shadow<br />

lines <strong>and</strong> patterns.<br />

Generally a tennis court should be set out with the longitudinal axis of the court perpendicular to the<br />

azimuth of the sun (the angular measurement of the horizontal location of the sun in relation to true<br />

north). Since the azimuth of the sun constantly shift according to the time of day, the season of the<br />

year <strong>and</strong> the latitude in which it is observed, the exact alignment of the court may be determine by the<br />

following infl uencing factors:<br />

• Season of the year during which the court is intended for play.<br />

• Time of day during which the court is intended for play.<br />

In addition to the above the following factors may also infl uence the orientation of the court:<br />

• Other structures <strong>and</strong> site features.<br />

• Neighbouring property.<br />

• Vehicle <strong>and</strong> pedestrian traffi c.<br />

• Prevailing winds.<br />

• Property lines.<br />

• Zoning Requirements.<br />
