Lifeguard chairs<br />

Each public swimming pool shall have at least one elevated lifeguard chair for every 186 square metres<br />

of pool surface area or 150 bathers. The chairs must be located close to the deep end of the pool <strong>and</strong><br />

provide a clear unobstructed view of the bottom of the pool. If a pool is equipped with more than one<br />

chair, the chairs have to be situated on opposite sides of the pool.<br />

Lifesaving <strong>and</strong> safety equipment<br />

Each public swimming pool must be provided with at least two Coast Guard type ring buoys, each with<br />

a 15 metre long, 20 mm diameter or other approved rope attached to it.<br />

In addition a shepherds crook mounted on a 5.0 metre pole shall be provided. All safety equipment must<br />

be conspicuously located <strong>and</strong> must be readily accessible for immediate use. All safety equipment must<br />

be maintained on a regular basis.<br />

Ablution <strong>and</strong> dressing room facilities<br />

The general layout of ablution facilities have to be such that bathers leaving the dressing room pass<br />

the toilets <strong>and</strong> showers in sequence before entering the pool area. All entrances <strong>and</strong> exits have to be<br />

effectively screened to interrupt the line sight of persons outside the dressing rooms. Separate facilities<br />

have to be provided for each sex.<br />

The design <strong>and</strong> construction of the ablution <strong>and</strong> dressing room facilities have to conform to the national<br />

building regulations <strong>and</strong> should be well light <strong>and</strong> ventilated.<br />

Toilet facilities for each sex shall be provided as set out in the table below:<br />

MEN WOMEN<br />

One toilet <strong>and</strong> one urinal per 100 bathers or a<br />

fraction thereof<br />

One shower per 50 bathers with a minimum of<br />

two showers<br />

One wash h<strong>and</strong> basin per 100 bathers or fraction<br />

thereof<br />

One toilet per 50 bathers or a fraction thereof but<br />

in no case less than two toilets<br />

One shower per 50 bathers with a minimum of<br />

two showers<br />

One wash h<strong>and</strong> basin per 100 bathers or fraction<br />

thereof<br />

Toilet roll holders, soap dispensers, etc. are to be provided to all facilities. In addition seating is to be<br />

placed in all dressing rooms. Finishes to fl oors are to be easily cleanable <strong>and</strong> slip resistant.<br />

All public swimming pools to be enclosed with a fence or wall at least 2.0 metre high to ensure that<br />

small children, dogs, livestock are not allowed access to the enclosure other than through the entrance<br />

doors or gates.<br />
