Swimming<br />
Corners shall be rounded. Pool linings, specifi cally plastic <strong>and</strong> similar linings <strong>and</strong> fi nishes not totally<br />
bonded to the poolside <strong>and</strong> bottom are prohibited.<br />
Shape<br />
The shape of a public swimming pool has to conform to the following:<br />
Floors<br />
• The pool may be any shape except that the shape may not be hazardous to users <strong>and</strong> it<br />
must provide adequate water circulation.<br />
• There shall be no protrusions, extensions, <strong>and</strong> means of entanglement or other obstructions<br />
that may cause injury to users. This does not prohibit the installation of water features,<br />
slides, water play equipment, <strong>and</strong> water volleyball or basketball nets.<br />
• Where a racing lane terminates in a swimming pool the wall shall be plum to a depth of<br />
1.50 metre below the waterline, below which the wall shall have a radius where it joins the<br />
fl oor.<br />
• The minimum average width of a public swimming pool shall be 4.30 metre, which shall be<br />
calculated by dividing the surface area by the total length of the pool.<br />
• Copings or cantilevered decks may project may project from the wall of a swimming pool to<br />
provide a h<strong>and</strong>hold for users. The coping or deck should be rounded, have a slip resistant<br />
surface <strong>and</strong> shall not exceed 90 mm in thickness. The overhang may not be less than 25<br />
mm <strong>and</strong> not more than 50 mm. All corners created by the coping or deck shall be rounded<br />
in both vertical <strong>and</strong> horizontal planes to avoid sharp corners.<br />
• Pool decks adjacent to the pool have to be at least 3.0 metres wide <strong>and</strong> have to be<br />
continuous <strong>and</strong> unobstructed except where diving boards <strong>and</strong> platforms are installed where<br />
the walkway shall extend at least 2.50 metres to each side <strong>and</strong> behind the board or platform<br />
but not less than 3.0 metres from the pool wall.<br />
• Pool decks have to slope away from the pool with a gradient of 1:3 to properly located deck<br />
drains or other points of disposal.<br />
• Pool decks have to be constructed of concrete or other inorganic material with a slip<br />
resistant fi nish which is free from sharp objects or surfaces <strong>and</strong> is easily cleanable.<br />
• Decks to have expansion joints that are fi lled I with an approved polysulphide sealant to<br />
prevent water ingress <strong>and</strong> cracking of the fi nished surface.<br />
• All construction joints at the junction of the pool <strong>and</strong> the pool decks to be similarly sealed.<br />
The slope of a public swimming pool fl oor, from the shallow end towards the deep end up to the point<br />
of the fi rst change in slope shall not exceed a gradient of 1:10.<br />
