1.4.7 Boxing<br />
Boxing is a combat is a combat sport in which two participants of similar weight fi ght each other with<br />
their fi sts. Fights take place in boxing rings <strong>and</strong> boxers wear protective gloves, genital protectors, mouth<br />
protectors <strong>and</strong> in amateur fi ghts wear protective head gear.<br />
The ring<br />
In terms with World Boxing Association rules the rings used in World Championship bouts are to measure<br />
no less 5.486 metre on all four sides <strong>and</strong> no more than 7.315 metre on all four sides between the ropes.<br />
The ring fl oor shall not extend further than 457.2 mm beyond the ropes.<br />
The ring padding must consist of a 25 mm thick layer of “Ensolite Boxing Ring Pad” or similar material<br />
applied over a 25 mm thick base of Celotex Building Board or similar material. The padding must be<br />
covered with canvas, drill or similar material tied tightly under the platform.<br />
All boxing rings must be equipped with four parallel ring ropes each of no less than 25 mm diameter<br />
thick. The ropes are to be constructed out of either manila, synthetic or plastic or any similar material<br />
<strong>and</strong> may not have any metal particles in them. The fi rst rope must be positioned 457 mm above the<br />
ring fl oor level, the second rope to be positioned at 762 mm above the ring fl oor, the third rope is to be<br />
positioned 1067 mm above the ring fl oor <strong>and</strong> the fourth rope is to be positioned 1372 mm above the<br />
ring fl oor.<br />
The ropes are secured to the ring fl oor with rigid steel uprights that are covered with protective material<br />
<strong>and</strong> must be secured on the outside of the extended ring fl oor with the ring ropes secured with diagonal<br />
ropes at each rope level. The fl oor of the ring may be raised <strong>and</strong> in each case the supporting structure<br />
must be verifi ed by a Registered Structural Engineer.<br />
The gloves<br />
The weight of the gloves to be used in world championship bouts must be as follows:<br />

• From Super Welterweight up to <strong>and</strong> including Heavyweight, ten (10) ounces.<br />
• From Minimum up to <strong>and</strong> including Welterweight, eight (8) ounces.<br />
Boxing<br />
• When in the contract of boxers the gloves trademark is not established, the Local<br />
Commissioner shall decide the glove trademark to be used.<br />
In all categories including Middleweight the b<strong>and</strong>age shall be of no more than ten (10) yards of soft<br />
gauze of no more than 25 mm wide <strong>and</strong> no more than 1.83m of surgeon’s tape on each h<strong>and</strong>.<br />
In categories between Middleweight <strong>and</strong> up <strong>and</strong> including heavyweights the b<strong>and</strong>age shall be of no<br />
more than twelve (12) yards of soft gauze of no more than 25 mm wide <strong>and</strong> no more than 2.43m of<br />
surgeon’s tape on each h<strong>and</strong>. The binding of the surgeon’s tape must not be applied in less than 25mm<br />
from the knuckles of the contender’s h<strong>and</strong>s.
