The gradient from the point of fi rst change in slope towards the deep end shall not exceed 1:3. The<br />

depth at the fi rst point of change in slope shall be a minimum depth of 1500 mm. All parts of the fl oor<br />

must drain towards a main drain.<br />

The transitional radius where the fl oor of a public swimming pool meets the walls shall comply with<br />

the following:<br />

• The centre of the radius shall be no less than 915 mm below the waterline in the deep end<br />

<strong>and</strong> no less than 610 mm below the waterline in the shallow end.<br />

• The radius shall be tangent at the point where the radius meets the wall or fl oor.<br />

• The radius shall be equal to or greater than the depth of the swimming pool minus the<br />

vertical wall depth measured from the waterline minus 100 mm.<br />

Water recirculation <strong>and</strong> fi ltering system<br />

The water circulation system that consists of the necessary piping, pumps, fi lters, water<br />

conditioning equipment <strong>and</strong> disinfecting equipment shall conform to the following:<br />

• Each pool shall a separate system<br />

• The circulation system shall be adequate to fi lter <strong>and</strong> disinfect the entire pool within eight<br />

(8) hours. Bypassing chemical feeders or similar devises may be exempted from this<br />

requirement with the approval of the Department.<br />

• The circulation system of a wading pool shall be adequate to fi lter <strong>and</strong> disinfect the entire<br />

pool within one (1) hour.<br />

• Whilst in use, the water circulation system shall operate continuously.<br />

• Water circulation components shall comply with SABS requirements <strong>and</strong> Institute<br />

International St<strong>and</strong>ard Number 50 (INSF) “Circulation System Components <strong>and</strong> Related<br />

Materials for Swimming Pools, Spas <strong>and</strong> Hot Tubs”.<br />

• The swimming pool may only be fi lled with water from an approved source.<br />

• Water withdrawn from a public swimming pool shall not be returned unless it has been<br />

fi ltered <strong>and</strong> adequately disinfected except in instances where water is circulated for water<br />

features <strong>and</strong> water slides.<br />

The piping system shall conform to the following:<br />

Swimming<br />

• Designed to carry the required quantity if water at a velocity of not more than 3.0 metre<br />

per second when located on the discharge side of a pump, except for PVC discharge piping<br />

where the velocity shall not exceed 2.4 metre per second <strong>and</strong> no less than 1.8 metres per<br />

second when located on the suction side of the pump.
