1.4.11. Gymnastics<br />

Gymnastics is a sport involving the performance of exercises requiring physical strength, agility <strong>and</strong><br />

coordination.<br />

The various forms of exercises (each requiring specifi c apparatus <strong>and</strong> space) may be briefl y described<br />

as the following:<br />

• Uneven Bars<br />

• Balance Beam<br />

• Floor Exercise<br />

• Vault<br />

• High <strong>and</strong> Parallel Bars<br />

• Still Rings<br />

• Pommel Horse<br />

• Artistic Gymnastics<br />

• Rhythmic Gymnastics<br />

• Trampoline <strong>and</strong> Tumbling<br />

• Aerobic Gymnastics<br />

• Team Gymnastics<br />

• Display Gymnastics<br />

The above events are generally performed indoors <strong>and</strong> require the following special characteristics:<br />

General fl oor area<br />

The overall respective fl oor areas for the various apparatus are dealt with in detail in the multi-purpose<br />

halls section. In general a suspended timber or vinyl sheeted fl oor suffi ces for most of the apparatus.<br />

Some apparatus will, however, require canvas (or other synthetic material) clad dense foam mats for<br />

the Gymnasts personal protection.<br />

Floor events<br />

Gymnastics<br />

The fl oor event takes place on a 12 metre square sprung fl oor which comprises the following:<br />

• Carpet laid over a hard foam which in turn is placed over a layer of plywood which is<br />

supported by springs or dense foam blocks.<br />
