1.4.12 Hockey<br />
Hockey is a sport where two teams, of eleven players each, compete by manoeuvring a ball into the<br />
opponent’s goal using a hockey stick<br />
Hockey is played on fi elds that may be grassed, s<strong>and</strong>-based artifi cial surfaces or water-based artifi cial<br />
surfaces. The fi eld is rectangular 91.40 metres long <strong>and</strong> 55 metres wide. The longer lines are called<br />
sidelines <strong>and</strong> the shorter lines are called back lines. The goal-line is part of the back line.<br />
Flagposts<br />
Flag posts 1200 – 1500 mm high are placed at each corner of the fi eld <strong>and</strong> at the centre line 910 mm<br />
outside the sidelines.<br />
Shooting circles<br />
A line 3.66 metre long is drawn in front of each goal, parallel to <strong>and</strong> 14.63 metre from the back line. This<br />
line is continued in both directions to meet the back line by quadrants which have the nearest inside<br />
corner of the goal-post as their centre.<br />
On both sides of the goal, marks for penalty corners are drawn on the back line inside the fi eld, at<br />
distances of 4.55 metre <strong>and</strong> 9.14 metre from the nearest goal-post. A spot with a diameter of 150 mm<br />
is marked in front of the centre of each goal at a distance of 6.40 metre from the goal-line.<br />
Goals<br />
A set of goals consists of two vertical posts 3.66 metre apart, joined by a horizontal crossbar 2.14<br />
metre above the playing fi eld level. The goals have a 460 mm high backboard fi xed to two 460 mm high<br />
sideboards. Nets are attached to the posts, crossbar <strong>and</strong> the back <strong>and</strong> sideboards.<br />
EQUIPMENT<br />
The ball<br />
The ball must be cylindrical in shape <strong>and</strong> hard <strong>and</strong> may not weigh less than 156 gram <strong>and</strong> not more than<br />
163 gram. The ball may be solid or hollow with an outer surface of any natural or synthetic surface.<br />
Stick<br />
The stick may have a fl at face on its left h<strong>and</strong> side only.<br />
The head of the stick must be curved <strong>and</strong> must be made of wood. It must have rounded edges <strong>and</strong> there<br />
may be no metal fi ttings, sharp edges or splinters.<br />
The stick may not weigh less than 340 gram or more than 794 gram <strong>and</strong> it must be able to pass through<br />
a ring with an inner diameter of 510 mm.<br />
