• Outlet piping shall be sized to circulate at least 50 % of the capacity of the circulation<br />
system <strong>and</strong> shall have a properly installed <strong>and</strong> approved cover.<br />
• Stainless steel <strong>and</strong> other special gutter systems may be used provided they are hydraulically<br />
equivalent to overfl ow gutters.<br />
Mixed inlet types, such as skimmers <strong>and</strong> gutters are prohibited on the same body of water.<br />
Ladders, steps <strong>and</strong> recessed steps<br />
At least one set of steps shall be provided in the shallow end of each swimming pool. Where the deep<br />
section is greater than 6.0 metres in width, two ladders, located on opposite sides of the deep section<br />
are required.<br />
A minimum of two means of egress are required in all pools <strong>and</strong> there shall be at least one ladder for<br />
every 23 metres of perimeter. Preformed step holes with suitable h<strong>and</strong>rails may be substituted for<br />
ladders.<br />
Steps must be permanently marked so as to be clearly visible from above or below the pool surface<br />
<strong>and</strong> shall not project into the pool in such manner which will create a hazard <strong>and</strong> shall conform to the<br />
following:<br />
• Steps may be constructed in the shallow end of a public swimming pool.<br />
• All tread surfaces of steps must be slip resistant.<br />
• The location of steps, ladders <strong>and</strong> recessed treads shall not interfere with racing lanes.<br />
• H<strong>and</strong>rails shall be provided at either the side or in the middle of all stairways.<br />
Swimming<br />
• H<strong>and</strong>rails must be installed in such a way that they can only be removed with the aid of<br />
tools.<br />
• A swimming pool ladder shall be equipped with at least two h<strong>and</strong>rails. All treads on ladders<br />
to have a slip resistant fi nish.<br />
• Ladder treads to have a minimum tread width of 25 mm. The minimum height of the risers<br />
is 70 mm with a maximum riser height of 300 mm.<br />
• Below the waterline the there shall be a clearance of not more than 160 mm <strong>and</strong> not less<br />
than 80 mm between any ladder tread <strong>and</strong> the wall as measured from the side of the tread<br />
closest to the wall.<br />
• Recessed treads shall be designed in such a way as to drain into the pool to prevent the<br />
accumulation of dirt.<br />
• Recessed treads to have a tread width between 120 mm <strong>and</strong> a maximum of 300 mm<br />
deep.<br />
