A dragonfish is a small, 2-foot long, flat fish<br />

that makes its home on <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> shallow lakes,<br />

rivers, or streams. <strong>The</strong>y are non-aggressive and<br />

spend <strong>the</strong>ir days eating miniscule water creatures,<br />

insects, and aquatic plants. <strong>The</strong> dragonfish’s scales<br />

are brown, mottled with black.<br />

Combat<br />

Dragonfish are not aggressive and prefer<br />

to lie on <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> a body <strong>of</strong> water, waiting<br />

for a victim to accidentally step on it so that its<br />

poisonous spines penetrate <strong>the</strong> victim’s flesh. If<br />

forced into melee, a dragonfish cannot use its<br />

spines and attacks with its bite.<br />

Spines (Ex): A dragonfish’s back is covered<br />

with long, sharp spines. Stepping on a motionless<br />

dragonfish causes its spines to penetrate and break<br />

<strong>of</strong>f in <strong>the</strong> victim’s flesh. Such a victim is subject to<br />

attack from 1d4 spines, each <strong>of</strong> which deals damage<br />

and injects poison into <strong>the</strong> wound. Removing a<br />

spine deals 1d2 points <strong>of</strong> nonlethal damage.<br />

Camouflage (Ex): A dragonfish can lay flat<br />

on <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> a shallow body <strong>of</strong> water, making<br />

it very hard to notice. Such a motionless dragonfish<br />

has a +10 circumstance bonus on Hide checks.<br />

Skills: A dragonfish has a +8 racial bonus on<br />

any Swim check to perform some special action or<br />

avoid a hazard. It can always choose to take 10 on<br />

a Swim check, even if distracted or endangered. It<br />

can use <strong>the</strong> run action while swimming, provided<br />

it swims in a straight line.<br />
