Many a seaman that ventures out into <strong>the</strong><br />

trackless sea is destined never to look again on<br />

<strong>the</strong> loved ones he left behind. Ei<strong>the</strong>r death or <strong>the</strong><br />

lure <strong>of</strong> foreign lands keeps <strong>the</strong>m from returning to<br />

those who wait patiently for <strong>the</strong>m. Pining away on<br />

shore for <strong>the</strong> sight <strong>of</strong> a lost husband or son, and<br />

ultimately dying <strong>of</strong> a broken heart, some women<br />

return to haunt <strong>the</strong> coast as gray ladies.<br />

A gray lady is <strong>the</strong> shade <strong>of</strong> a woman who<br />

died heartbroken and alone waiting for <strong>the</strong> return<br />

<strong>of</strong> a loved one from across <strong>the</strong> sea. <strong>The</strong>y appear<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r walking along <strong>the</strong> beach at night, leaving<br />

no footprints in <strong>the</strong>ir wake, or standing in <strong>the</strong> surf<br />

staring out to sea. <strong>The</strong>y are clad in long, flowing<br />

gray robes and scarves that whip around <strong>the</strong>m<br />

wildly even when no wind is present. <strong>The</strong>ir faces<br />

are usually covered or turned away from those who<br />

would see <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

<strong>The</strong> appearance <strong>of</strong> a gray lady is usually a<br />

harbinger <strong>of</strong> some future catastrophe, such as a<br />

great storm or a shipwreck. Such events will occur<br />

within a few days <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sighting <strong>of</strong> a gray lady.<br />

Combat<br />

A gray lady will attack any creature that<br />

approaches her, her rage and frustration at having<br />

lost her loved one knowing no bounds. In melee, a<br />

gray lady flails wildly with her ghostly arms and<br />

opponent proves to be particularly strong, a gray<br />

lady will pull aside <strong>the</strong> scarves and cowl that cover<br />

her face.<br />

Chill Touch (Su): <strong>The</strong> incorporeal touch<br />

attack <strong>of</strong> a gray lady is supernaturally cold, dealing<br />

damage as a chill touch spell (caster level 4th; DC<br />

13). A gray lady may use this ability with every<br />

melee attack she makes. <strong>The</strong> save DC is Charismabased.<br />

Fear Aura (Su): A gray lady radiates a 30foot-radius<br />

fear aura as a free action. A creature<br />

in <strong>the</strong> area must succeed on a DC 13 Will save or<br />

be affected as though by a fear spell (caster level<br />

4th). A creature that successfully saves cannot be<br />

affected again by <strong>the</strong> same gray lady’s aura for 24<br />

hours. <strong>The</strong> save DC is Charisma-based.<br />

Ravages <strong>of</strong> Death (Su): Any living creature<br />

that sees <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> a gray lady suddenly knows<br />

her pain, frustration and rage, and has a glimpse <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> anguish <strong>of</strong> what it is like to die broken hearted.<br />

Any opponent experiencing this tragic emotion<br />

must succeed on a DC 13 Will save or be wrought<br />

with despair. <strong>The</strong> victim will fall into a stupor,<br />

unable to take any action o<strong>the</strong>r than weeping and<br />

screaming for 1d6 hours. A calm emotions spell<br />

will end this effect. <strong>The</strong> save DC is Charismabased.
