to the Purarcas, "he ruled over the whole earth with might<br />

and justice, and offered 10,000 sacrifices. Of him this verse<br />

pursue his steps in sacrifice, in munificence, in devotion, in<br />

courtesy, and in self-control'<br />

K^ITA YUGA. The first age of the world, a period of<br />

1,728,000 years. See Tuga. K^/TTIKAS. The Pleiades. The six nurses of Karttikeya,<br />

the god of war. They were daughters of a king according to<br />

one legend, wives of JMshis according to another.<br />

KRIYA-YOGA-SARA. A portion of the Padma Pura?ia<br />

treating of rites and ceremonies. See Padnia Purawa.<br />

KRODHA, KRODHA-VASA, One of the many daughters<br />

of Daksha and sister-wives of Kasyapa. She was the mother<br />

"of all sharp-toothed monsters, whether on the earth, amongst<br />

the birds, or in the waters, that were devourers of flesh."<br />

KSHAJVADA-CHAEA- 'Night walkers/ Ghosts of evil<br />

character, goblins, Rakshasas.<br />

KSHAPAJVAKA. An author who was one of " the nine<br />

gems " at the court of Yikramaditya. See Nava-ratna.<br />

KSHATRIYA- The second or regal and warrior caste,<br />

See Varna.<br />

KSHATTRL A name by which Yidura was familiarly<br />

called The term, as explained in Manu, means the son of a<br />

Sudra father and Brahman mother, but Yidura's father was a<br />

Brahman and his mother a slave girL<br />

KSHEMAKA. Son of Nira-mitra or Nimi, and the last<br />

prince of the Lunar race. There is a memorial verse quoted in<br />

the Vishnu Purawa which say, " The race which, gave origin<br />

to Brahmans arid Kshatriyas, and which was purified by rega)<br />

sages, terminated with Kshemaka in the Kali age."<br />

KSHEMA-VJm)DHI. A general of the Salwas who had<br />

a command in the army which attacked Dwaraka, and was<br />

defeated by Krishna's son, Samba.<br />

KULA-PARYATAS. 'Family mountains.' A series or sys<br />

tern of seven chains of mountains in Southern India They are<br />

Mahendra, Malaya, Sahya, $uktimat, j&ksha (for which Gandha-madana<br />

is sometimes substituted), Yindhya and Paripatra<br />

Mahendra is the Orissa chain ; Malaya, the hills of Malabar
