TWASHTRIUDA VANA,<br />

husband and wife for each other, even from the womb. He<br />

develops the seminal germ in the womb, and is the shaper of<br />

all forms, human and animal. He has generated a strong man,<br />

a lover of the gods, a swift horse, and has created the whole<br />

"<br />

world. As the $atapatha Brahmana expresses it, He has pro-<br />

duced and nourishes a great variety of creatures ; all worlds (or<br />

beings) are his, and are known to him ; he has given to heaven<br />

and earth and to all things their forms. " He created Brahmanas-<br />

pati above all creatures, and generated Agni along with heaven<br />

and earth, the waters and the Bhngus. He is master of the<br />

universe, the first-born protector and leader, and knows the<br />

region of the gods. He is supplicated to nourish the worshipper<br />

and protect his sacrifice. He is the bestower of blessings, and<br />

is possessed of abundant wealth, and grants prosperity. He is<br />

asked, like other gods, to take pleasure in the hymns of his<br />

worshippers and to grant them riches. He is associated with<br />

the JSibhus, and is represented as sometimes envying and some-<br />

times admiring their skill He is represented as being occa-<br />

sionally in a state of hostility with Indra, and he had a son<br />

named Viswa-rupa (omniform) or Tri-siras, who had three heads,<br />

six eyes, and three mouths, who was especially obnoxious to<br />

Indra, and was slain by him. He had a daughter, Saranyu,<br />

whom he married to Vivas wat, and she was the mother of the<br />

Aswins, In the Puranas Twash/n is identified with Viswa-<br />

karman, the artisan of the gods, and sometimes also with Praja-<br />

pati One of the Adityas and one of the Eudras bear this name,<br />

as also did a prince descended from Bharata.<br />

UCHCHALff-SKAVAS. The model horse. The white<br />

horse of Indra, produced at the churning of the ocean. It is<br />

fed on ambrosia, and is held to be the king of horses.<br />

UCHCHHISHrA. The remains of a sacrifice, to which<br />

divine powers are ascribed by the .ffig-veda.<br />

UDAYA-GIRI PAKVATA. The eastern mountain from<br />

behind which the sun rises.<br />

UDAYANA. i. A prince of the Lunar race, and son of Sahas-<br />

ranlka, who is the hero of a popular story. He was king of<br />

Vatsa, and is commonly called Vatsaraja. His capital was<br />

KausambL Yasava-datta, princess of Ujjayinl, saw him in a<br />

dream and fell in love with him. He was decoyed to that city,<br />

and there kept in captivity by the king, ChawZasena ; but when
