David Abulafia is Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Mediterranean History at<br />

Cambridge <strong>University</strong>. His books include The Western Mediterranean<br />

Kingdoms (1997), and he has edited The Mediterranean<br />

in History (2003).<br />

Susan E. Alcock is John H. D’Arms Collegiate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />

Classical Archaeology and Classics at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Michigan.<br />

Author most recently <strong>of</strong> Archaeologies <strong>of</strong> the Greek Past:<br />

Landscape, Monuments and Memories (2002), she is a 2001<br />

recipient <strong>of</strong> a MacArthur Fellowship.<br />

Christopher Drew Armstrong is currently a post-doctoral<br />

fellow in the Department <strong>of</strong> Fine Art at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Toronto, where he is preparing a book on architectural theory<br />

in the French Enlightenment.<br />

Roger S. Bagnall is a pr<strong>of</strong>essor in the History and Classics<br />

Departments at Columbia <strong>University</strong> and author <strong>of</strong>, among<br />

other books, Egypt in Late Antiquity (1993) and Reading Papyri,<br />

Writing Ancient History (1995).<br />

Glen Bowersock is Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Ancient History at the Institute<br />

for Advanced Study in Princeton. He has published over a<br />

dozen books on the Roman Empire, Late Antiquity, and the<br />

Ancient Near East.<br />

Alain Bresson is pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Ancient History at the <strong>University</strong><br />

Michel-de-Montaigne Bordeaux 3. Among his recent publications<br />

is La Cité marchande (2001); he is preparing a new<br />

work <strong>of</strong> synthesis on the economy <strong>of</strong> ancient Greece.<br />

Angelos Chaniotis is Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Ancient History and Vice-<br />

Rector at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Heidelberg. He is co-editor <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum, and with Pierre Ducrey<br />

has recently edited Army and Power in the Ancient World (2002).
