climate all year round. Flourishing hydrangeas line the<br />
streets and any respectable balcony in the island’s picturesque<br />
capital of Funchal is adorned with a sea of flowers.<br />

Sometimes a short break can make a huge difference.<br />
This is definitely true when it comes to a tall ship cruise<br />

the Garajonay National Park<br />
The 40-square-kilometre (15-square-mile) Garajonay<br />
National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a very<br />
unusual corner of the earth. Laurel trees and two-metrehigh<br />
ferns create a fog forest in which beard lichen hang<br />
down from the trees and moss clings to gnarled branches –<br />
one of nature’s mystical spectacles. The laurel trees are<br />
relics from the tertiary period.<br />
