A lecturer and his passion: history Historian and author Gerrit Aust studied history, romance studies, archaeology and politics at the University of Hamburg and has taught courses on these subjects for many years. He has helped curate a number of high-profile exhibitions and for the past 12 years he has been travelling as an on-board lecturer. He will be giving talks on the wide variety of subject areas we encounter on this trip. Depending upon the circumstances, it is possible that another lecturer will be on board for this trip. The familiar and the unknown Danube cities The Danube, Europe’s second longest river, connects a fascinating range of cultures and ten different countries. On these journeys we will travel to historical and modern capital cities, a multitude of villages and virtually undiscovered landscapes. The stunning approach to Budapest Not many cities can claim that the panoramic view from their banks has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but Budapest is one that can. The banks of Buda and Pest lie on either side of the river just like the pages of an open book, proudly displaying a great many of the city’s sights – from the fairy-tale Fisherman’s Bastion and the neo-Gothic parliament building to Art Nouveau baths and city palaces. The Iron Gate Over several thousand years, the tireless force of the Danube forged a pathway through the South Carpathians and Erz mountains of Serbia. The resulting scene is known as the Iron Gate, or Djerdap in Serbian. Today this narrow, cliff-lined gorge is a national park and an undeniably romantic channel. The narrowest point is known as the Kazan, which means “kettle”. City of the tsars – Veliko Tarnovo For around 100 years Veliko Tarnovo was the magnificent and well-fortified capital of the Bulgarian Empire. Its location is certainly fit for a tsar – three tall hills form the historical heart of the city. Several monuments marking its colourful past are still standing today. Belogradchik – mother nature’s masterpiece The area surrounding Belogradchik is peppered with unusual sculpture-like natural rock formations. As well as individual names, each rock also has its own legend. Watch these reddish stone structures transform into eagles, giant mushrooms, lions and monks – all you need is a touch of imagination. The isolated fort Kaleto is also hidden within this landscape. The captivating Danube delta The fishing village of St George, close to the famous Black Sea coast, is home to the Danube’s kilometre zero. It is normally referred to as the source of a river, though it is actually the Danube’s mouth. This spot marks the first kilometres of water that form the river’s ramified delta, creating a natural paradise for many rare species of plant and animal. And right at the heart of Europe’s largest continuous reed bed you will find the island of Sakhalin. The island is actually a spit, one of the youngest in Europe, and each year it stretches closer towards the Black Sea. In July and August it is the meeting place for a huge number of Dalmatian pelicans – the largest of the pelican species.
