follow in the Venetians’ tracks en route to summer living on the Adriatic
and the legendary greek coast: Venice – kusadasi (Izmir)
Culinary Istria
Even in ancient times, Istria’s wine and olives were reputed
to be among the best, and today their olive oils are still
considered some of the world’s finest. Those who have
tried the Malvasier wine praise its aromatic freshness.
And food connoisseurs can look forward to tasting a real
delicacy in the form of white truffles.
Split – the Adriatic metropolis
The Roman Diocletian’s Palace is the heart and soul
of Split’s old town and now protected as a UNESCO
World Heritage Site. This city within a city has been in
existence since as early as the third century – a place
where magnificent government, cultural, and economic
buildings were housed behind high fortification walls.
elizabeth‘s favourite island – Corfu
Corfu found fame as a popular traveller’s destination as
early as the 19th century. Bored of life at court, Empress
Elisabeth of Austria travelled to the island and used it as
a place to realise her dreams. She ordered a palace to be
built in the style of Greek mythology and dedicated it to
her favourite hero, Achilles. It is called the Achilleion.
An island straight out of a novel
Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionic islands, has been famed
for its charm and magic ever since ancient times. The
island has always been hotly contested territory. It is
also the backdrop for Louis de Bernières’ famous novel
“Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”. It is a tale of war and love,
but also of scenic beauty – one so special it seems to
have been made for the gods... and for your imagination.
