The small kingdoms of the Netherlands and Belgium made their mark on
history during the golden age as seafaring and trading powers. Their success
gave rise to many glorious buildings and a strong sense of multiculturalism,
which continues to influence the lifestyle and character of these countries
today. In Amsterdam and Antwerp, tradition has transformed into modern
trends; in Bruges, Ghent and Middelburg, medieval architecture has been
delightfully integrated into the contemporary setting; and on the shores of
Lake IJssel, former international harbours such as Hoorn and Enkhuizen have
blossomed into dreamy idylls. For the first time, the RiveR Cloud ii will
cruise along the Maas and pay a visit to Maastricht, a city in the running to
become the European Capital of Culture, and rightly so.
As we make our way along the Rhine and the Main, our voyage will feel like a
journey through the ages – surrounded by legend, myth and wine, which still
plays a pivotal role today, not only in castles and small wine-growing villages
but also in former monasteries. Besides wine, the romantic settings are an
equally ubiquitous element on this trip, whether in Heidelberg or in the Upper
Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Step back in time to the
Middle Ages in Cologne and Strasbourg, or be inspired by contemporary art.
Basle also proves itself to be a world class art hub as “Switzerland’s Cultural
Capital”. It was here around 40 years ago that one simple idea gave rise to the
most important international modern art exhibition, Art Basel, an event you will
have the opportunity to visit on one of our trips.
