A lecturer and his passion: history
Gerrit Aust holds degrees in history, romance studies,
archaeology and politics, works not only as a lecturer
but also as an author, and will be our on-board historian
throughout this trip. He joins us on a journey that will take
us through countries in transition, giving guests an insight
into current and historical events.
Depending upon the circumstances, it is possible that another lecturer will be on
board for this trip.
Pécs – European Capital of Culture
Pécs, first founded around 2,000 years ago, has been influenced
by a great many cultures, the impacts of which
can be spotted on almost every corner of this beautiful
city – be it in Roman graves, Turkish minarets or Byzantine
baths. Hungary’s oldest university town was even crowned
European Capital of Culture in 2010.
the Iron gate
The Iron Gate is a spectacular gorge formation along the
Danube. At its narrowest point, the Kazan, the river is
forced through an opening of just a few metres. Imposing
cliffs conjure up a wildly romantic landscape.
Belgrade – a city in transition
In the Serbian capital of Belgrade there is a scent of the
Orient in the air as the Turkish rule of the country only
ended in the 19th century. In the 20th century the city
had to endure two world wars and life behind the “Iron
Curtain”. Now Belgrade is looking towards the future as a
dynamic and creative city.
