the legends of the Adriatic and the
Peloponnese, the light of the cyclades
and fairy tales from the Arabian nights.
A journey across the Mediterranean always turns into a trip through history.
In the early Middle Ages, vast regions of the western Mediterranean were
ruled by the Moors. The legacy of this period can still be seen in a handful of
ancient buildings in the imperial cities of Morocco, but also with surprising
frequency on European soil. Ibiza’s old town, Valencia and Cádiz, and particularly
Granada, display the most striking examples of the legacy of the Moors,
almost like real-life scenes from the Arabian Nights.
The Moorish legacy in the south of Spain is comparable with the treasures of
antiquity found around the Aegean. The legendary Mycenae in the Peloponnese,
the impressive Pergamon in Turkey and the once sacred island of Delos
bring Greek mythology back to life. But the winds will not only take us back
in time, they will also carry us to small ports where you can sample a slice
of modern life. Bathed in the famous light of the Cyclades, fishing boats bob
gently on the water, locals get together in taverns and enjoy a pace of life
which is both bustling and relaxed.
Also on the Adriatic, history has left its mark. The fortified old town of Split
was once part of a massive Roman palace complex, and the baroque facades
in Rovinj were built during the Habsburg period. If the ubiquity of all these city
palaces and churches reminds you somewhat of Venice, it is no coincidence –
the Adriatic was the main sailing channel of the Venetians and the former
territory of the proud Venetian Republic.
