Sailing the Aegean and through the tides of history:
Istanbul – Piraeus (Athens)
Pergamon and Mycenae
In ancient times the extensive archaeological site of
Mycenae, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was one of the
most influential Greek cities. The palace section was surrounded
by a gigantic wall; even now you still have to
enter through the famous Lion Gate. Pergamon was just
as important. For many centuries the town was a wealthy
and important centre for the arts. Several rows of pillars,
altars and a sloping theatre still remain.
The Jerusalem of the Aegean: Patmos
The idyllic island of Patmos is believed to be the place
where John the Evangelist wrote the Book of Revelation.
The grotto where he is said to have had his apocalyptic
visions is one of the holiest sites for followers of the Greek
Orthodox Church. The monastery built in his name has
been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Charming little harbour towns
Nauplion’s old town lies in a picture-perfect setting on
a peninsula and can be easily explored without a guide.
Three forts built in the Venetian era still stand guard over
this pretty town which was the site of the first meeting
of the Greek parliament in 1825. A trip to the cliff-side
village of Monemvasia will take you back in time to the
romantic Middle Ages. Behind protective walls you will
discover the picturesque lower town with its narrow
streets – the perfect place to get lost.
