New cruise ships are built year after year, becoming bigger and better as
par for the course. We, however, have decided to stay small and beautiful,
remaining true to our philosophy and values.
Tradition comes into a dimension of its own, especially on our windjammers.
When the ship heaves to and the sails are set, a spectacle begins that
captivates everyone on board. Excitement is in the air. Curiosity and
anticipation. Every manoeuvre, every step can be observed from very close
quarters. Nothing is hidden from view. Nothing happens at the touch of
a button. Men and women raise, lower and lash the sails down by hand.
Beautifully coiled rope turns into running rigging. Sailors climb up high,
balance on the standing rigging and release the heavy sail. It rustles and
crackles, then flaps for an instant before finding the wind. For a brief moment,
even the ship seems to be holding its breath before leaping into action. The
windjammer gathers speed – proud and majestic under billowing white sails.
For many, the destination then becomes blissfully secondary. For anyone who
has ever experienced the spectacle of setting sail will know that a voyage on
a majestic windjammer is so much more than just a cruise.
