The central location of the Mediterranean’s largest island
means it has always been a very coveted spot, whether
as a colony, a strategic outpost or a trading site. Virtually
no other Mediterranean island has had such a turbulent
history leaving such a diverse, multicultural legacy. Almost
every historical epoch has left its mark in Syracuse, a
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Cappella Palatina of the
Palazzo reale
Palermo’s royal palace was once the seat of power for
Norman Kings of Sicily. Its imposing fortress structure
was given a castle-like character thanks to Renaissance
architectural elements. The palace’s Palatine Chapel, or
Cappella Palatina, is a masterpiece of Arabic, Byzantine
and Norman styles, with its ceilings and walls exquisitely
adorned with gold-ground mosaic decoration.
The small volcanic island of lipari
Lipari is part of the Aeolian Islands, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. In some places, the island’s volcanic rock
formations seem to resemble sculptures and its cultural
history stretches back 7,000 years. The tiny harbours are
the place to come to if you want to absorb the infectious
southern Italian lifestyle.
