Sintra, a settlement established by the Moors, is a town
of palaces. In medieval times Portuguese kings and nobility
came here to reside during the summer months.
So it comes as no surprise that the houses and garden
complexes seem to be overflowing with splendour. The
fairy-tale castle of Nacional da Pena is seen as Portugal’s
equivalent to Germany’s “Schloss Neuschwanstein”.
Seville – the capital of Andalusia
The birth of Seville and its founders are shrouded in
legend. What is certain is that the city displays strong
Roman and Arab influences and has been part of Spain
since 1248. Many of the buildings in the city’s extraordinarily
beautiful centre are UNESCO World Heritage Sites,
including the Alcazar Moorish palace and the Maria de la
Sede cathedral.
Andalusia’s white villages
Narrow alleyways, whitewashed houses, splendid latticed
windows and welcoming courtyards – there is still something
very North African about the white villages of
“Al-Andalus”. Many of these sites used to be owned by
wealthy Moors. But over the centuries they then became
somewhat Gothic, baroque or modernised in a renaissance
style.
