Romantic castles
The Romans worshipped the Rhine as a deity and composed poems about
the Moselle. They founded the cities of Strasbourg, Cologne and Koblenz, left
their mark in Trier with the largest surviving city gate from the Roman empire,
and brought wine to the region. During medieval times it was their vines
that turned godly monks into aspiring winemakers and the vast vineyards
helped to fill the coffers of certain lords and monasteries. All the ancient buildings
are now part of the rich historical legacy of this wine-growing region –
sedate, resplendent and romantic.
The French region of Alsace could have come straight from a picture book. As
well as their quaint pubs and delightful wine taverns, Strasbourg and Colmar
also boast ornately decorated timber facades, picturesque market squares and
numerous flower-lined canals. Built from pink-shimmering Vosges stone, the
cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Strasbourg’s old town, is
also worth a visit. And on our journey through the Upper Middle Rhine Valley
you will be dazzled by majestic palaces, countless castles and the Loreley.
They take you on a walk through the region’s history, not only in the Rhine area
and in Baden but also along the Main and the Moselle. Autumn sets the mood
masterfully, painting the leaves of trees and vines in its glorious colours and
artistically bathing both urban and rural settings in the perfect light.
