could be generalised to the real-world is not clear. It is possible that the effects<br />

of retrieval strategy may be found only when participants are exposed very<br />

briefly to stimuli whereas in most real world situations people would have<br />

much longer to process and encode information.<br />

The main purpose of this experiment was to attempt to manipulate<br />

retrieval strategy in a within-participant design and provide an opportunity to<br />

investigate this further whilst avoiding the prohibitively large numbers of<br />

participants which would be required to demonstrate these small effects in a<br />

between-participants design. This was not successfully achieved in this<br />

experiment but these experiments did explore some of the interesting<br />

implications of using different methodologies to investigate the effects of<br />

emotion on memory. Due to the limitations in pursing this area of investigation<br />

which have been discussed above, it was decided to move to a new paradigm in<br />

Experiment 4 to investigate the influence of emotion on memory using an<br />

alternative method which has recently been used to investigate some interesting<br />

aspects of this area (e.g. Kensinger et al., 2006).<br />
