associated with these data is that the total amount of fish<br />

reported by respondents included fish from all sources<br />

(e.g., fresh, frozen, canned, domestic, international<br />

origin). The CSFII surveys did not identify the source of<br />

the fish consumed. This type of information may be<br />

relevant for some assessments. It should also be noted<br />

that because these recommendations are based on 1994­<br />

1996, 1998 CSFII data, they may not reflect any recent<br />

changes that may have occurred in consumption patterns.<br />

Recommended values should be selected that are<br />

relevant to the assessment, choosing the appropriate age<br />

groups and source of fish (i.e., freshwater/estuarine,<br />

marine, and total fish). In some cases a different study or<br />

studies may be particularly relevant to the needs of an<br />

assessment, in which case results from that specific study<br />

or studies may be used instead of the recommended<br />

values provided here. For example, it may be<br />

advantageous to use available regional or site-specific<br />

estimates if the assessment targets a particular region or<br />

site. In addition, seasonal, gender, and fish species<br />

variations should be considered when appropriate, if data<br />

are available.<br />

Recommendations are not provided for recreational<br />

marine fish intake, recreational freshwater fish intake, or<br />

intake among Native American children because the<br />

available data are limited to certain geographic areas<br />

and/or tribes and cannot be readily generalized to the U.S.<br />

population as a whole. However, data from two relevant<br />

recreational marine studies (KCA, 1994 and Alcoa, 1998);<br />

two relevant recreational freshwater studies (West et al.,<br />

1989 and Benson et al., 2001); and four Native American<br />

studies (CRITFC, 1994; Toy et al., 1996; Duncan, 2000;<br />

and Polissar et al., 2006) are provided in this chapter.<br />

Assessors may use these data, if appropriate to the<br />

scenarios being assessed. These studies were performed<br />

at various study locations using various age groups of<br />

children.<br />

For recreational marine fish intake, the KCA<br />

(1994) study was conducted in Delaware using the age<br />

groups 0 to 9 years and 10 to 19 years and the Alcoa<br />

(1998) study was conducted in Texas using the age groups<br />
