BIOETHICAL THOUGHT OF ALBERT SCHWEITZER
His Commitment against Nuclear Weapons
Albert Schweitzer, a theologian, musician, doctor, missionary worker,
and a philosopher, has been remembered by his permanent promotion of
holistic comprehension of the term ‘life’, which was followed by a specific
ethical conception based on caring and responsibility. Core of his ethics is a
concept of ‘reverence for life’ as a moving force of our self-realization and
empathy towards all living creatures. Uniqueness of Schweitzer’s bioethical
thought is invigorated with his continuous humanitarian work as well as
his political undertaking in social movements during 1950’s.
This paper focuses on Schweitzer’s role in anti-nuclear and anti-war
movements which marked years after the Second World War. After the first
hydrogen bomb test in 1954, Schweitzer, who was already a laureate of a
Nobel peace prize, began with intense public engagement against further
testing and weapon development and for promotion of responsibility towards
our successors. Paper deals with his speeches, letters, and public appeals
by which he engaged in anti-nuclear and anti-war activities alongside
with a distinguished world scientists and humanitarians.

U suvremenom svijetu zbog promjene svjetonazora, kao i zbog niza
nedostatnosti i neučinkovitosti, dolazi do zaokreta u procesima liječenja u
humanoj medicini. Sličan se postupak otčitava i u procesima liječenja na
području veterinarske medicine. Time neki tradicionalni postupci liječenja,
prisutni u svijetu već tisućama godina, intenzivnije prelaze iz misaonih
sustava u terapijsku praksu. Ovome vrijedi dodati da je, barem kada je
riječ o okolnostima u Hrvatskoj, prvi korak ostvaren stvaranjem legislativnog
okvira vezanog uz djelatnost ekološke poljoprivrede. Tim zakonskim
