works of art can have significant influence on our moral reasoning, we
shall briefly, following the argumentation suggested by Martha Nussbaum,
present some possible challenges and objections to the idea of human cloning,
as well as possible answers to these objections. We shall then analyse
how our subject is presented in some works of art, such as the novel The
Possibility of an Island by French novelist Michel Houellebecq, and in science
fiction films Gattaca and The Island. Considering the latter example,
we will show how some works of art can have negative influence on our
moral reasoning.

U DJELU ŽIVOT ŽIVOTINJÂ J. M. COETZEEA
Cilj je ovog izlaganja ukratko definirati pojam biopoetike, te potom s
toga gledišta promotriti djelo Život životinjâ J. M. Coetzeea. Autor u djelu
svestrano tematizira jedan od najizazovnijih problema u suvremenoj bioetičkoj
raspravi – problem humanog postupanja prema životinjama. Obzirom
da je u središtu njegova razmatranja odnos ljudi prema životinjama,
prikazan iz različitih perspektiva koje ne daju konačnu istinu i rješenje,
nego se pluriperspektivno pristupa problemu, djelo poziva na otvorenost
mišljenja u pristupanju tematici i na nepretencioznost u traženju jedinstvene
istine, koja bi isključivala drugačija stajališta.

IN J. M. COETZEE’S THE LIVES OF ANIMALS
The aim of this paper is to briefly define the concept of biopoetics, and
observe the work The Lives of Animals by J. M. Coetzee from that point
of view. The author comprehensively deals with one of the most challenging
problems in contemporary bioethical debate – the problem of humane
treatment of animals. Considering that the center of his reflection is the relation
of humans towards animals given from different perspectives, which
