CHAPTER 5
Tumours of the Uterine Cervix
Cervical carcinoma is the second most common cancer in
women worldwide. Chronic infection with human papillomavirus
(HPV) is a necessary event in the evolution of cervical
carcinomas. The incidence of cervical cancer, which is predominantly
of the squamous cell type, has markedly declined
in many developed countries, mainly due to cytological screening
programmes. Today, more than 80% of women dying from
cervical cancer live in developing countries. It is anticipated
that preventive HPV vaccination will become available in the
near future.
