CIN. Early stromal invasion is encompassed<br />

in the term microinvasive carc i-<br />

noma.<br />

The criteria for the diagnosis of microinvasive<br />

<strong>carcinoma</strong> were historically based<br />

on the depth of invasion, and the<br />

ascribed upper limit has varied in the literature<br />

from 3 to 5 mm. Microinvasive<br />

<strong>carcinoma</strong> now equates most closely to<br />

FIGO stage IA, the definition of which<br />

includes both the depth and horizontal<br />

dimension of the tumour. The current<br />

FIGO staging is controversial because it<br />

does not recognize early stromal invasion<br />

as a separate entity {371}. Whether<br />

microinvasive <strong>carcinoma</strong> should include<br />

FIGO Stage IA2 because there is a significantly<br />

increased risk of local lymph<br />

node metastasis between 3 and 5 mm<br />

depth of invasion has also been questioned.<br />

Pooled data indicate that a maximum<br />

depth of invasion of 3 mm or less is<br />

associated with a risk of lymph node<br />

metastasis of
