Many are rooted in a particular community, especially urban communities.… The coming of age of my generation has witnessed the emergence of a population of humanists who see the public conversation as the primary context in which they write, conduct research, and sometimes teach. 29 As for the new generation that first reached college age in 1993— the Millennials, “Dot-Nets,” or “echo-Boomers”—they are another large cohort with a strong sense of a generation gap. Sixty-nine percent believe that their generation is unique. 30 That is the highest rate by far, and it is not simply a result of their being young. (There is no linear relationship between age and strength of generational identity.) Mannheim’s theory would suggest that an entelechy has occurred. Indeed, many observers suspect that the Millennials experienced the following formative events. They first encountered the public world during the prosperous and peaceful Clinton years, when government seemed to be shrinking but working well, and opportunities were expanding in the entrepreneurial technology markets. Surveys showed them to be idealistic, tolerant, and committed to volunteer service, but not especially political. Then, on September 11, 2001, they were confronted with a frightening attack that was politically motivated and that prompted (or at least excused) the U.S. government to pass momentous laws, start a war, and increase spending. Politics was unavoidable. It will take decades for the Millennials to sort out their formative experiences, and they will never be of one mind. The early signs, however, suggest a strong commitment to volunteer service matched by an increased interest in formal politics.
