for the analysis. Patients were diagnosed with metabolic syndrome using
criteria articulated in the joint interim statement for harmonizing the
metabolic syndrome (Circulation; Nov. 4, 2009). Their average age was
63±15 years; 63% were female, and all were of black race/ethnicity. We
assessed OSA risk using the Apnea Risk Evaluation System (ARES),
defining high risk as an ARES score ≥6. Patients also rated their anxiety
level using the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Data was coded and analyzed
by an experienced statistician using SPSS 18.0.
Results: Of the sample, 88% were diagnosed with hypertension, 69%
with diabetes, 83% with dyslipidemia, and 90% were overweight/obese;
37% had a history of heart disease and 11% had a stroke. Seventy-three
