How do STIs increase one’s risk of getting HIV? How can you tell that someone has HIV? How can MSM prevent HIV? 212
MSM and HIV Activity C. Misconceptions about HIV, STIs and MSM Divide into pairs and hand out blank cards and markers to each pair. Ask pairs to write on each card things they have heard about HIV, STIs and MSM that they are unsure about. Tape the cards on the wall. Then discuss each statement and provide information to correct misinformation. Examples of Misconceptions MSM won’t get HIV if they have sex without condoms with a sweetheart/regular partner. MSM won’t get HIV if they have unsafe sex with a man who is handsome or healthy looking. MSM only get HIV from having sex with women, not men. Only sex workers get HIV. There is no sperm in the anus so there is no HIV transmission. If one sexual partner is HIV positive, the other must also be HIV positive. Washing yourself immediately after sex can prevent HIV transmission. 213
