Challenge What People Say<br />

about Men who Have Sex<br />

with Men<br />

Facilitator’s Note:<br />

This exercise looks at how to challenge men who have sex with men<br />

(MSM) stigma in one’s day to day work as a health worker, non-governmental<br />

organization (NGO) staff member or policeman. Participants learn how to be<br />

assertive <strong>and</strong> then practice this skill in a series of paired role plays. The aim is to<br />

help people see that acting against MSM stigma can be done whenever it<br />

happens.<br />

Objectives:<br />

By the end of the session participants will have the skills to challenge MSM stigma<br />

<strong>and</strong> change the situation using an assertive approach<br />

Target Group:<br />

Health care providers, police officers, NGO <strong>and</strong> community-based organization<br />

(CBO) staff, <strong>and</strong> community leaders<br />

Time:<br />

1 hour<br />

Steps:<br />

1. Introduction: Explain that the session is aimed at practicing how to<br />

challenge stigma in an assertive way, i.e., looking the stigmatizer in the eye <strong>and</strong><br />

saying what we think, feel <strong>and</strong> want in a clear, forceful, <strong>and</strong> confident way but<br />

without being aggressive or showing anger.<br />
