It may be so gradual you do not notice
it but your foyer carpet will have become
very soiled by spring if you do nothing
about it. The aisle runners will also suffer
and. to a lesser degree, your mezzanine and
lounging room carpeting.
CARPETS SHOULD BE CLEANED
Certainly your soiled carpeting sliould be
cleaned some time during the winter or it
may be so dirty by spring you can't get it
clean. Also, dirt allowed to remain too
long in any kind of fabric promotes slow
decay.
As a test, take a white rag soaked in
cleaning solution and rub a small spot on
your carpeting. Some of the liquid hand
soap from the lavatory, mixed with some
water, will suffice. This easy test will
quickly tell you how dirty the carpet is.
If very soiled do not let it go until spring,
but shampoo it at once.
If you have outside rug cleaners do your
work, call them in. If you do the work
yourselves, be sure you use a good shampoo,
one that creates a "dry," heavy lather that
doesn't quickly disintegrate. Ordinary
soaps get the carpet too wet, and especially
is this true of the sulphonated alcohol
cleaners which, being wetting agents,
penetrate the carpet, causing it to shrink
and rip at the seams. Also, the wrong kind
of cleaners may leave an offensive odor
and may cause mold.
USE STANDARD SHAMPOO
If you use a standard rug shampoo product,
made by a reputable manufacturer and
follow his instructions, you should have no
trouble. In fact, it is fairly easy, even for a
novice, to shampoo tacked down carpeting.
He has only to be careful about using too
much solution, avoid cleaning too long in
one place, and to be sure he overlaps his
cleaning paths to avoid streaks between
the paths.
For best results, a second operator follows
closely with a vacuum cleaner to
pick up the dirty lather. Or, if a suitable
vacuum cleaner is not available, one
adapted for picking up water, the second
man should squeegee off the excess lather
before it dries back into the carpet.
When the carpet has been cleaned, brush
all the wet nap in the correct direction
before it dries.
By observing the foregoing suggestions
you can keep your theatre spic and span
even during the tough winter weather,
saving yourself and your floors from a
hard, possibly damaging .lob in the spring.
Also, whether or not the customers
realize it at the time, your tidiness in the
midst of untidiness everywhere else will
make a favorable impression, and when
you cater to the amusement seeking public,
good impressions usually add up.
