Coliseum Remodeling
Now in Its Final Phase
SEATTLE—One of the largest renovation
jobs in recent years got under way on Monday
(27) when the Coliseum, operated by
Evergreen Theatres, closed its doors for the
final stages of a complete remodeling job
that will make this historic theatre one of
the city's most modern and beautiful picture
palaces. It will reopen again in time for
the Christmas holiday business. Since August
1, workmen have been busy with preliminary
alterations, but the work has now
reached the point where the theatre must
close for final completion of a facelifting job
that will cost close to $250,000.
In the interior, a beautiful new main floor
lounge is under construction, with new restrooms
for men and women. There will be
new carpeting, new seating, an all-new heating
and ventilating system, an entirely new
motif in soft pastel decoration, a new proscenium
arch with an Austrian puUup type
of curtain, modernization of sound equipment
and new screen and lighting equipment—all
designed to make the theatre the
last word in beauty and efficiency.
The exterior, too, will be exten.sively remodeled.
The largest neon-lighted sign in
the northwest will be installed, and replacing
the old dome will be a huge revolving disk,
carrying out a Hollywood studio atmosphere.
Tfie old frame doors will be replaced with
solid glass doors and the boxoffice will be
enlarged and beautified.
Frank L. Newman sr., president of Evergreen
Theatres, commented; "We have been
planning for some time to make the Coliseum
one of our finest theatres, and under
the able and artistic direction of B. Marcus
Priteca, nationally known theatre architect,
and the E. F. Schuck Construction Co. to
carry out his ideas, the new Coliseum will be
a thing of beauty and comfort.
